Grand Duchess
About This Spot
Stepping into Grand Duchess feels like discovering a well-kept secret within Washington, DC’s bustling 18th Street corridor. This cocktail bar strikes a delicate balance between unpretentious comfort and thoughtful craft, making it a quiet refuge whether you’re settling in for an after-work drink or a laid-back weekend evening. The space is intimate yet inviting, with a warmth that encourages slow conversations and moments of easy connection.
The pace here is relaxed but alive with a certain pulse—no rush, just a gentle buzz from the bartenders shaping cocktails with care and an attentive crowd that knows good spirits when they see them. It’s the sort of spot where the playlist hums at just the right level, and outdoor seating invites you to linger longer when the weather allows, perfect for watching the neighborhood life unfold.
What makes Grand Duchess feel distinct is its approach to both drink and dish. The cocktails lean into classic inspirations but arrive with a twist—like a smoky, bitters-driven Manhattan or a bright, herbaceous mezcal concoction—each crafted with a quiet confidence. The food echoes this spirit too: think comforting plates that feel elevated but never fussy, whether it’s a rich pasta, a perfectly seared crab cake served alongside a lively street corn, or a playful Philly cheesesteak empanada that adds a layer of surprise. The kitchen’s offerings never compete with the cocktails but complement them thoughtfully, making for a well-rounded experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly personal.
Grand Duchess is that kind of neighborhood anchor bar where bartenders remember your usual, where it’s easy to come as you are and leave feeling a little more connected—whether that’s to the place, the people, or simply a well-made drink after a long day. It’s quietly stylish without trying too hard, a genuine local haunt that draws you back with its blend of simplicity, warmth, and a hint of unexpected charm.

Smaller, divey bar, which is great. Also plenty of cocktail choices if that's your thing. I usually sit outside and it seems like table service for the front patio can get lost in the shuffle of stuff inside.

Haters will say this place deserves 4.7 stars, but this place deserves all 5 of its stars. They crush it every time. Playing the cranberries for st paddy’s day was a great move. Also the hot dog was amazing

I love Grand Duchess! It's a solid bar with a beautiful interior and a no nonsense menu. Their sandwiches are always a hit and it's just a good cozy spot when you want to go out for a drink but don't want to be overwhelmed.

Very chill bar especially on a weekday when we went! Great drinks and the bartender was great! Nice spot to have a quiet drink with some friends, I got a delicious French 75.

Great vibe, great cocktails. Quality bartending staff--sampled all but one of the drinks on the base menu (as of 11/18) and all were good. I don't remember the name of the one I liked best but it had rye and amaro and was deliciously smoky and bitter tasting. "Off menu" versions of regular cocktails (Manhattan, negroni) were also well executed. I didn't try the grilled cheese but had some of my friend's Brussels sprouts and they were very good. Seems sort of random for a place like this to have good Brussels sprouts but hey, a lot of places you would except to have good sprouts have very bad sprouts. Overall a fun place with good drinks [and good Brussels sprouts].

Nice place to grab a drink in a quickly and dive bar feel of a place. A good amount of seats and standing room at the bar later in the night. The food is mainly bar snacks but overall pretty good
